  • What is Wankel Motor and Wankel engine? How does it work?
  • The Wankel engine is a motor developed in 1954 by German engineer Felix Wankel. The engine was first introduced in 1957 to the NSU firm’s stand in Neckarsulm, Germany. It was first installed in 1963 by the NSU Spider brand. In 1967, NSU accepted the Ro 80 dual-disc wankel engine. The NSU Ro 80 had an engine volume of 2 × 497.5 cm3. It produced 136 HP at 5500 rpm. The weight of the engine was 103 kg. The compression ratio was 9/1. Apart from NSU, the Japanese Toyo Kogyo also produced cars powered by the wankel engine.


  • In 1972, the American GM company spent $ 50 million to develop the Wankel engine in 5 years, developing a Wankel engine in its 185HP range and using it in its automobiles. The American Ford company has also made several agreements to use the Wankel engine in its vehicles. Other than these, Datsun in Holland, Rolls-Royce in England and Alfa romeo companies in Italy were interested in Wankel engine. Today, Mazda company uses this engine in RX7 and RX8 models.

  • In contrast to the internal structure of the Wankel engine, a normal motor is much simpler. A rotor (rotary piston) (which may be 2-3-4 rotors according to the design) and an eccentric shaft (rotating the eccentric shaft in the 4-stroke engines) is working in an oval body with a core rotating idly. It is devoid of complicated moving parts compared to a modern 4-cylinder, 16-valve, 2-excentric motor. The rotor is connected to the main shaft of the motor with the aid of an internal gear and an external gear.






  • As long as the engine is running, suction, compression, work and exhaust times occur around the rotor. This is where the greatest difficulty of the engine comes from. The rotor must be changed frequently due to its very fast wear around. Generally, rotor edges made from polymeric materials have not yet been produced by a hard-to-wear material.


  • Wankel engines work on a four time basis. Each time the rotor rotates, it has a job for each four-stroke engine in each tank. The eccentric shaft turns three revolutions in the meantime.


  • It work is the following. The engine control is provided via the channel in the housing. The rotor is housed in a cam of the eccentric shaft. The pinion, which is fixed in the housing body, is grasped by the gear which is opened to the inside of the gear rotor. The rotor is rolled over the fixed pinion gear. It creates a turning force on the eccentric shaft when rolling. This rotational movement in the eccentric shaft is transmitted to the transmission. One side of the water-cooled engine body is equipped with suction and exhaust vents on opposite sides of the engine body.
