Ubuntu Server

  • What does ubuntu server mean?
  • Ubuntu Server is the official developer of Ubuntu, Canonical Ltd. Is an operating system distribution that uses the Linux kernel for servers. Unlike Ubuntu, which is available for desktop and laptop computer platforms, Ubuntu Server, which includes some additional features and services, is just an operating system deployment that runs on server systems. Ubuntu Server is not a Linux distribution that personal users can install onto PCs.

  • Ubuntu is one of the most preferred operating system versions on the server side, as well as being a completely free Linux operating system distribution. Ubuntu Server is a server-ready version of Ubuntu, unlike the Ubuntu distribution, the user does not have a graphical interface and installation is done with command-line help.

  • Ubuntu Server is widely preferred in the server space because it can be run in full compatibility with many systems and platforms. Ubuntu Server deployment is also compatible with popular products such as Microsoft Hyper-V and Wmware ESX server. With the easy-to-scale Ubuntu Server, you can easily create the appropriate infrastructure to host your web sites and game servers in your server.

  • How to Install Ubuntu Server
  • Ubuntu Server is a server-based Linux operating system distribution developed for servers, independent of the version of Ubuntu used for personal computers. Unlike standard Ubuntu deployments, Ubuntu Server does not use a graphical interface for installation. Therefore, the person who completes the installation should at least have to master the server and Linux commands at the base level.

  • Steps for installing Ubuntu Server;
  • Boot the server system with ISO file via CD-ROM or USB.
  • When the boot screen comes up, a menu will open for you to select the installation language.
  • You can switch to the next stage by selecting the installation language you prefer from the menu.
  • Now the actual boot screen of Ubuntu Server will come up and the screen where different function menus are located will be opened.
  • We can continue with the “Install Ubuntu Server” step to install the Ubuntu Server directly.
  • From the Setup screen, we have to select the language that the operating system will use again.
  • We will continue in English because many software in English language works in great harmony. Nevertheless, you can successfully complete the installation via similar steps with a different language option.
  • From the location menu, you can select the geographical location you are currently in. You are completely free to choose the location you want in spite of your choice of English language.
  • In the next step, Ubuntu installation will want to know which continent from which we are located. Again in this step you have the right to continue by responding as you wish.
  • In our next step, Ubuntu Server will want to know what country we are from.
  • You can also make this choice yourself.
  • The Ubuntu Server installation has the ability to automatically recognize your keyboard type.
  • After the country selection, the next screen will ask you whether you want your keyboard type to be automatically detected under the heading “Configure the Keyboard“. With the “Yes” option, you can automatically recognize your keyboard and check if it will not recognize it.
  • You can continue with “No” to make manual selection. When you continue to make manual selections, keyboard types and models will be displayed according to the countries.
  • From this screen, you can select English for the appropriate selection for your keyboard and select your keyboard from the Q or F option.
  • Now we can specify a hostname, ie a network name, for our server. Once you have identified your network step, we can move on to the next step with the “Continue” step.
  • The full name will require a full name or nickname from us.
  • You are completely free with the name you choose to configure the server as well.
  • Specify the username to be preferred when logging into the server in the next step.
  • If you do not have a username, you can use the “admin” username.
  • Now, we will have to enter the password twice for our user account.
  • Make sure to choose a password that you do not use on a private and different platform. If you choose a simple password, the setupassistant will tell you that your password is a weak password. Nevertheless, you can accept simple ciphering into the system.
  • After setting the password, your home directory will be encrypted and you will get the option of encrypting it. Encryption of the home directory is a great advantage in terms of security, slowing the processing of files and making it more difficult to copy your files in the future. At this stage, you still have your choice.
  • From the Time Zone menu, set the time of our server to match the region we are in. Automatically, the setup assistant will try to guess your time zone. However, you can still set the clock manually if you wish.
  • Now, we have come to the driver configuration phase, which is an important step in terms of the server. Once you have configured your drives as you wish, you can start the installation.
  • When the installation starts, the necessary files will be copied to the hard disk and system preparation will begin. Be patient and wait in this phase.
  • After a significant portion of the files have been transferred, the setup assistant will ask if you want to use the HTTP Proxy. Continue with the “Continue” button if you do not know how to use this feature because many users do not use it.
  • Now our server will download some necessary files over the internet. If the server is not connected to the internete, it will give you an option to show these files via USB or CD.
  • As the files are downloaded, you will be presented with a question about security updates. You can answer this question according to your own preference. By default, it is recommended that you keep security updates turned on.
  • In the next step, you will encounter a menu of service packs that you will use for your server. Check which one of the service packs, including LAMP, you want to install, and finally continue with the “Continue” step. Make sure that the OpenSSH Server package is absolutely selected for access to your server.
  • If you do not plan to use an external bootloader in your bootloader step, you can complete the installation of the GRUB bootloader by saying “Yes“.
  • Finally, a message will appear on the screen indicating that the installation of Ubuntu Server has been completed. After you click “Continue“, you can remove the boot media inserted in the server and restart the server.
  • Your server will now be ready for use. You can log in to the Ubuntu Server by typing your username and password.
