  • Born in Havana in 1853, Marti was deported to Spain because of his opposition to the colonial government when he was 17 years old. When he lived in Spain, he published a brochure describing the sufferings of political prisoners in Cuba. After graduating from Zaragoza University, he went to Mexico City (ciudad de Mexico) where he began his literary studies.

  • Marti, who had to leave this country due to his opposition to the regime formed by the military coup, passed to Guatemala but had to leave because of the pressure of the government. In 1878, he returned to Cuba, making use of general aftenes, but he had to go back to exile because of his struggle against the Spanish government. He first went to Spain and then to the United States, then to New York for a year, then to Venezuela. Despite the fact that he did not settle in Venezuela, the dictatorship returned to the United States because of the regime. In 1895, Cuba left the United States for the Independence War.

 

  • On April 11, 1895, Jose Marti reached Cuba with the power of the dissident opponents, including Generalísimo Máximo Gómez y Báez. On May 19, 1895, in the Battle of Dos Rios, he lost his life in conflict with Spanish forces. The grave is in the cemetery of Santa Efigenia in Santiago de Cuba.

  • Jose Marti is the national hero and symbol of Cuba. He was a politician, a revolutionary, a poet, a journalist, a professor of literature and an ambassador. The training they had lived and learned helped him to succeed in every field. Marti was born in Cuba in 1853. Cuba was a colony of Spain at that time. Jose Marti’s father was Spanish, and his mother was from the Canary Islands.
